coming soon to a j.crew near you...

Apparently, tomorrow PETA will be protesting J. Crew on 28th St. at noon for their use of fur in the Fall/Holiday collection. After I learned about this today and envisioned this post, it was going to be all funny and talk about how it was kind of exciting because nothing like that ever happens around here. But then I sat down to find out more about this little situation, and I must admit...I feel a little like vomiting now. I do realize that this is a PETA site and we have to listen to both sides of a story. Also, J. Crew maintains that most of their fur comes from North America and that animals are not mistreated.

Now, I am definitely a meat eater and I'm a little fuzzy on the difference between slaughtering animals for their meat, and slaughtering animals for their fur (as long as they are not skinned alive and are slaughtered as humanely as slaughtering can take place). I do know that I feel pretty icky about this whole fur thing. Why does J. Crew need "tacky pom-poms" on shoes and fur trimmed hoods on puffer vests? It seems rather excessive. Plus, according to PETA, J. Crew had pledged in the past not to use real fur for it's product line. What happened to that? A little taste of high profits and we throw our standards out the window?

PETA drives me insane. Do we even have any fur at our store that's not shearling?

peta's heart is in the right place. some of their methods are a bit extreme, though. sometimes that's the only way to get anyone to listen.

but anything that tries to get us to take a closer look at our excessively indulgent lifestyles is o.k. in my book.
