It's funny how time can go so slow and yet so fast at the same time. I guess it's been about forever since I've made a post. On the other hand, I find myself just waiting...waiting for this school year to end, waiting to find out where or whether we'll move, waiting for some more noticeable signs of pregnancy, waiting for the next doctor's appointment.
I have one more thing I need to take care of before my provisional certificate can be converted to a standard certificate. This involves either taking a test or a class about the United States and Arizona constitutions. My district offered to pay for me to take the test so I decided to go that route. About a month or so ago I received the info and "study guide". The "study guide" is just a sample test with an answer key. After taking said sample test I realized I was going to fail. I contacted my district person and told her this and that perhaps I should pay for a class instead. She said, "Why not just take the test anyway and see how you do?" Okay...it's not my money. She told me about a book that many people were using to study from.
Time went by, the book was $35 so I neglected to purchase it. Finally, last weekend, one week before the test, I decided I better do something. So I plunked down the $35 plus an extra $18 for overnight shipping. The book was crap. My first clue was the thin paper and cheap cover...basically, I could have made this book at Staples. My next clue was the typo in the first sentence. The typos continued at a rate of about 1 per page. Fine, all this I was willing to accept if the book would just help me pass this test. I was skeptical because the sample test at the end of this book was made up of mostly knowledge type questions...remembering facts. Whereas the sample test in the official "study guide" was comprised mainly of application type questions...e.g. What was the significance of..., or What was the main reason for... And the book had none of this type of information in it.
I took the test yesterday. It was a disaster. I knew nothing and basically guessed at 85% of the test. Also, several questions into the test I realized that my book contained nothing about the US constitution which made up 60% of the questions on the test. I would say the $53 book helped me answer 10 of the 100 questions on the test. Now, I may be wrong, but I don't believe 10% would qualify as a passing score. I'm irritated and frustrated and I'm going to have to pay still more money to get this taken care of! BLARG!!!
