A Good Day

Is "crap" a swear word in kid language?? Do parents wash their kids mouths out with soap when they say "crap"? Sometimes I refer to the stuff in my kids desks as "crap" and they all look at me like I'm crazy and then start to giggle.

I have one and a half more days of teaching 1st grade for the year. Then I'll be working quickly to move my classroom across the hall. While that's going on, I'll begin my summer teaching assignment that'll last for three weeks. Then Dave and I will be moving to a new apartment. June promises to be a busy month.

Today I took a bunch of CDs, DVDs, and books to Half-Price Books. The buyer told me they like sellers to remain in the store while they work on an offer. I wasn't planning on this, but okay. I always spend most of my time in the Children's section and I found at least 10 books. By the time he paged me to let me know my offer was ready, I had made my way up to the front of the store where they keep the CDs. I look in the "J"s every time I'm in the store and it's never there...as I was reaching the end of the "J" section, I found it! The awesomeness that it Journey is mine again! Yes my friends, it was a good day.

"Crap" was a swear word when I was growing up. I wasn't aloud to use it. Though I could say "hell".

Which is interesting to me since friends families were aloud to say "crap" but not "hell".

Different families, different rules.

Well...I've already that particular swear word several times, each time followed by a stifled eruption of giggles, so I'll have to make it my goal not to have a potty mouth for next year!

"crap" was my family's replacement for "shit," except that we said "shit" a lot, too. which would explain why i sometimes say "shit" in front of kids and they say: "you just said the 's' word." and i say: "when? just now? no, i didn't."

crack-smoking little shits.

we weren't allowed to say "shut up" in my house. That was like telling someone to Fuck Off. We could only say "Be Quiet, Please." It sucked ... Oh yeah, we couldn't say things "sucked" either. But 'crap' was alright.

If I could tell the definition of the word to my dad with a straight face, without turning red, I could use it in any context I liked. (i never used the f word around the parental units) "Crap" and "hell" were never swear words but "sucked" and "dang" were.
freaking weirdo parents!!

What are the rules in your houses now Bri and Nisi?

Oh yes...in first grade, at least in most places, the "s" word is "shut-up". Now when I did my student teaching in 1st grade in GRPS, the "s" word was "shit". So whenever a kid tattles about someone using the "s" word now, I giggle a little myself.

No set rules yet - we don't say the real swear words (shit, fuck, ass, bitch) but other than that it hasn't been much of an issue. After the Cheri incident Ruby walked around the house saying "Bitch, Bitch, Bitch, Bitch" for about 3 days and we just ignored it until it stopped. Raene also went through a phrase where everything was "crap" we actually thought that was funny but decided not to encourage it. I do tell Raene that it is rude to say "shut up" but that has only been a problem a few times. Right now they just parrot what everyone else does so as long as we don't use the terms they wont either, the real test will be once they get into school and start learning this stuff from other kids.

Basically for us it'll be no "truckers mouth" words like bri said. Other than that "Hell" Marc would rather it not be said at all but I see no problem with speaking this word if it is not in a curse meaning ill feelings or hurt to someone. Same for all words used. I expect my children to be respectful and kind to people and their feelings. All those cutsey smart ass comments can wait until they are old enough to understand what they are saying and respect that what they say, might cause repercussion for them later.

but, that's all said in theory and in my minds eye "perfect world" we'll deal with it as it comes. Which means, I really have to work on my truckers mouth and respect for other's feelings. Oh, and I have to stop being so sexist too, insulting those idiot woman who are too stupid to wake up in the morning, let alone drive a car, isn't very healthy "teachings"
